Nepenthes villosa from Borneo Exotics: This Nepenthes is probably one of the most after and coveted Nepenthes of all time. Finally after an almost 10 year absence Borneo Exotics has released a new villosa clone! Narrowed down from 22 clones, this one clone claims to be Hardier and easier to grow then any other clone on the market(Borneo villosa or others). The starting size of these plants is at least a few years larger than any other plants offered on the market. Although they are size small, they are huge compared to anything I’ve seen. Hopefully we will finally have a villosa that can grow amongst our other favourite Highland Nepenthes Species.

Species Description: A classic species, pitchers are bright orange with a clawed peristome. Very rewarding for the advanced grower, but slow and needs low night-time temperatures. This is one of the most popular items on our list but is always in very limited supply.

Item Name: From a single carefully selected clone out of microprop.

Item Description: Originally from a culture received from the late Phil Mann, there is no provenance data but is suspected of originating from Gunung Kinabalu and selected many years ago from amongst 22 clones for its vigour, this clone is known to be far easier to grow than any example of this species offered from vendors elsewhere. N. villosa is renowned to be difficult to grow, and usually needs very cool night temperatures. However, we don’t find this with our clone. The photos shown here are from plants of this clone grown in our nurseries, which never drop below 12 deg C at night (the maximum temperature might reach 30deg C on a hot day).

More from Borneo Exotics regarding night time temperatures averages - The daytime max must be about 28 deg C, then after mid-afternoon it gradually falls, reaching a minimum 12 deg C just before sunrise. The change will not be linear of course but exponential. Probably by sunset the temperature is about 22 deg C and then the average may be somewhere around 16 or 17 deg C.

The difficult stage for this species is when plants are small and tender, but when established and hardened, they are not so difficult, but still slow. Although these plants are slightly smaller than our usual “small” size, having a leaf canopy of at about 3cm (1.2”) in diameter, they are considerably larger than the last time we offered them, some years back. They are VERY well hardened. Please note that it is a characteristic of this species that sometimes plants may have a healthy leaf canopy and pitchers and poorly developed root systems.

Borneo Exotics preferred media is live Sphagnum moss but a dead Sphagnum with extra drainage via perlite and/or orchid will likely work just as well. Plant with be shipped with roots wrapped in sphagnum moss wrapped with paper towel, in a sealed bag or container before boxing up.
