Dragon Fruit – Hylocereus undatus (Selenicereus undatus)
Grow your own tropical Dragon Fruit! Hylocereus undatus, now botanically classified as Selenicereus undatus, is a fast-growing climbing cactus famous for its spectacular night-blooming flowers and large, colourful edible dragon fruit.
These Dragon Fruit cuttings are an easy and economical way to start a new plant. Once rooted, plants grow vigorously and develop long, three-sided succulent stems that can be trained up a sturdy post, trellis, fence, or other support. Mature plants can become very large and make an impressive tropical specimen.
Dragon Fruit appreciates bright light to full sun, warmth, excellent drainage, and regular watering during active growth. Allow the growing medium to dry somewhat between waterings and avoid keeping the roots continuously wet. In Canada, plants are best grown in a greenhouse, sunroom, or outdoors during the warm summer months and brought into a protected, frost-free location for winter.
With maturity and good growing conditions, plants produce huge, fragrant white flowers that open at night, followed by the familiar pink-red Dragon Fruit with white flesh and small black seeds.
Cuttings have a young root system and will continue to root easily allow the cut end to remain dry/callus again if necessary before planting into a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Keep newly planted cuttings warm and only lightly moist as roots are just beginning to develop.
