Nepenthes (Pitcher Plants), Sarracenia (North American Pitcher Plants), Drosera (Sundews), Dionaea (Venus Flytraps), Pinguicula (Butterworts) Carnivorous Plants For Sale.
A very small and slow growing Cape Sundew. Has a nice red hue in bright light. Terribly slow to reproduce and after years in my care has never bloomed.
Drosera capensis, commonly known as the Cape sundew, is a small rosette-forming carnivorous species of perennial sundew native to the Cape in South Africa. D. capensis produces strap-like leaves, up to 3.5 centimetres (1.4 in) long (not including the petiole) and 0.5 centimetres (0.2 in) wide, which, as in all sundews, are covered in brightly coloured tentacles which secrete a sticky mucilage that traps arthropods. When insects are first trapped, the leaves roll lengthwise by thigmotropism toward the center. This aids digestion by bringing more digestive glands in contact with the prey. The plant leaf surrounds the prey within an hour while tentacles continue to move to further trap the prey. Digestion takes well over 6 hours after a prey's original ensnarement. The plant has a tendency to retain the dead leaves of previous seasons, and the main stem of the plant can become quite long and woody with time.
Please Note the sundews offer for sale are often younger small plants and may not be full sized, adult blooming sized plants. The "dew" is often lost in shipping, this is not a concern and will come back on the new growth and often on the current leaves as well. No dew over long term may indicate humidity issues as well.
Temperatures: above freezing and below 35C/95F. in the middle of that is perfect!
*Size Small 2” tall/wide
Leaves grow to be 3 to 6 inches, strap-shaped and held upright by thick petioles. The bright green leaves are thickly covered with red dew-laden hairs. Like all Drosera capensis, the leaves will coil around captured prey to increase surface area of leaf-to-insect, maximizing the nutrients extracted.
