Cymbidium goeringii ‘Chun Lan Zhong Tou’ 春蘭中透

Cymbidium goeringii ‘Chun Lan Zhong Tou’ 春蘭中透 is an exceptionally beautiful variegated Asian Cymbidium grown as much for its spectacular foliage as for its fragrant spring flowers.

This cultivar displays dramatic yellow to creamy-white central variegation surrounded by contrasting dark green margins. Individual leaves can vary considerably, with some showing broad cream centres and narrow green edging while others develop multiple green and yellow stripes. New growth can emerge brighter green or yellow before the mature variegation becomes fully established.

The term 中透 (Zhong Tou) is used for this distinctive central or “mid-leaf” style of variegation, and ‘Chun Lan Zhong Tou’ is specifically prized for its intensely saturated yellow coloration and graceful arching foliage. 

Cymbidium goeringii, traditionally known as 春蘭 (Chun Lan or Spring Orchid), is one of the classic East Asian Cymbidiums. It forms compact clumps of narrow leaves and normally produces a single highly fragrant flower per stem, occasionally two, during late winter to early spring. Flowers of the species are typically green to yellow-green or pale brownish-yellow with darker markings. 

Unlike conventional large-flowered Cymbidiums, these orchids are valued for the complete plant — foliage pattern, growth habit, fragrance and flower form — making a highly variegated cultivar like ‘Chun Lan Zhong Tou’ ornamental throughout the entire year.

Care

Light: Bright filtered light with some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun. Good light is important for compact growth and strong variegation, but protect the pale portions of the foliage from scorching summer midday sun.

Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Cymbidium goeringii naturally grows across temperate areas of East Asia and benefits from distinctly cooler autumn and winter conditions. 

Water: Keep evenly moist during active spring and summer growth while maintaining excellent drainage. Allow the mix to approach dryness before watering again rather than keeping the roots continuously saturated.

Winter Rest: Important. Reduce watering as temperatures fall and growth slows. Cool autumn and winter temperatures are beneficial for flower initiation.

Humidity: Moderate humidity with good air circulation.

Potting: Grow in an open, free-draining Asian Cymbidium mix that provides excellent root aeration while retaining some moisture.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly but regularly during active growth. Reduce feeding substantially during the cool winter resting period.

HOW TO GROW

If you’re new to Asian Cymbidiums, here’s a quick guide.

Light: Moderate to low. Most Cymbidiums are high light, but the Asian Cymbidiums are different. They do Best in a relatively shady spot.

Temperature: Hot to cold. Warm summers and cool winters give these temperate growers what they need, not below freezing, but you can leave them out till around 5-10c not problem, and temps over 30c fine as well.

Potting/Watering: Chinese Cymbidiums have long, straight, fat roots, pot them in a tall pot. use a coarse medium like Spagmoss and medium-sized bark or coco chunks. Asian Cymbidiums like a moist environment but not wet feet, so go for an open medium. Fertilize regularly in warm weather but not in cool, This should induce flowering in late winter to spring.
