Chiloschista nakornpanomensis
An incredibly unusual miniature orchid grown almost entirely for its spectacular exposed root system — until it flowers!
Chiloschista nakornpanomensis is a fascinating leafless epiphytic orchid originating from Southeast Asia and associated in cultivation with the Nakhon Phanom region of Thailand. Rather than relying primarily on leaves, the plant develops thick silvery-green photosynthetic roots that absorb moisture and light while clinging to its mount.
When in bloom, slender flower spikes emerge directly from the centre of the root mass and can carry numerous small yellow to greenish-yellow flowers, often with contrasting markings toward the centre. Flowers are approximately 1–1.5 cm across.
One of the most interesting characteristics of Chiloschista is that plants may occasionally produce small temporary green leaves during active growth. These may later be shed, leaving the plant apparently leafless once again. This is completely normal and part of what makes this genus so unusual.
Plants are supplied mounted on a ventilated plastic slab, allowing the roots maximum exposure to light, moisture and air.
Care
Light: Bright, filtered light. Because the exposed green roots photosynthesize, adequate light reaching the roots is important. Avoid harsh midday sun.
Temperature: Intermediate to warm. Approximately 18–30°C is a good growing range, with warmer conditions during active growth. Current specialist growers describe this plant as intermediate-warm to warm growing.
Water: Water or mist thoroughly during active growth and then allow the roots to dry before watering again. Mounted plants may need watering every 1–3 days under warm greenhouse conditions.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity with plenty of air movement.
Winter: Reduce watering somewhat during cooler, darker conditions. This species benefits from being kept somewhat drier in winter rather than remaining continuously wet.
Fertilizer: Fertilize lightly during active growth using dilute orchid fertilizer.
Mounting: Best grown mounted with the majority of the root system exposed. Do not bury the photosynthetic roots in conventional orchid potting mix.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Growth Habit: Mounted epiphytic / largely leafless
Plant Size: Miniature
Flower Colour: Yellow to greenish yellow
Mount: Ventilated plastic slab
